Theoretical elementary particle physics studies the fundamental questions of the elementary
building blocks of our world, along with the physical laws which govern their behavior. the
Standard Model of elementary particle physics summarizing these building blocks is similar to
the periodic table of chemical elements but at a size scale many orders of magnitude smaller.
Experimenters are testing it at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. In order to
compare the copious data produced by the experiments with the predictions of the model,
difficult calculations are required. The researchers on this proposal have all contributed to the
development of new methods for such calculations. Their continued development of these
methods, and the training of doctoral students and young researchers in them, are important
objectives of the CDFA. In addition, these same methods also have applications to
calculations of gravitational-wave templates used by gravitational-wave observatories such as
the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). The development of this
application is also part of the objectives of the CDFA.
