Researchers without borders (#EU4PHD)
The two-day event “Researchers without borders” (#EU4PHD) which took place in Paris on the 11th and 12th of December 2017 was organized by the Association Bernard Gregory (ABG), the French-German University () and the French-Italian University (FIU) and supported by the European Commission. It brought together representatives of companies, research institutes, mobility funding bodies and career advisors from different European countries to discuss about mobility and career development for PhDs in Europe.
92 participants attended the event which was opened by Dr Vincent Mignotte, Executive Director of the ABG, Prof Dr David Capitant, President of the , Dr Jean-Claude Arditti, Executive Committee Member of the FIU as well as Katrin Fehringer, Euraxess Coordinator. During two days, participants were able to deepen their knowledge of Europe's research landscape, recruitment processes in Europe's academic and industrial sectors, grants and funding for (post)doctoral mobility and career opportunities in Europe through plenary sessions, workshops, individual advisory sessions and a fair. The event was a great success. This was reflected not only in the quantitative evaluation form filled in by the participants, speakers and exhibitors but also in the very positive testimonials in terms of quality.
Mobility and career development for PhDs in Europe, the topics of the event, are issues of current relevance to the . That’s why, in 2017, the conducted a survey amongst 120 young scientists who had done a Franco-German PhD (cotutelle de thèse). The survey showed that many young scientists funded by the had already been internationally mobile even before their cotutelle de thèse. About 20% of them had even already completed a joint degree programme between France and Germany supported by the before being funded for their PhD. After their cotutelle de thèse they are also generally mobile: approximately 70% of them are currently working in an international context. And they are usually quick to find a job: most respondents (63%) had found a job appropriate to their skills and capacities within the first three months following the defence of their cotutelle de thèse. Furthermore, over 40% of them occupy leading positions with significant supervisory or project responsibilities. The survey therefore shows that doing a cotutelle de thèse has an instantly positive impact on employment and career development.
