Muscle wasting and weakness are devastating problems in patients with muscular dystrophies, cancer, cachexia of any cause, critical illness myopathy, and are increasingly affecting older individuals. The scope of the problems extends far beyond a group of relatively uncommon muscle diseases thus leading to a growing demand of excellently trained experts in the field of muscle research. These developments were taken into account when in 2010 the International Research Training Group for Myology – « MyoGrad » was established. The program is worldwide the first international structured platform to offer PhD training in muscle sciences.
Students accepted by MyoGrad conduct a bi-nationally supervised doctoral thesis (co-tutelle de thèse) within one of the 7 projects of the training group. They enroll in both Berlin and Paris Universities (with tuition paid once) and do research work both in Berlin and in Paris labs. At this early stage of their career they are already part of a very prestigious muscle science research community. After three years students defend their thesis before a doctorate committee equally composed of German and French academic representatives. Successful students obtain one doctoral degree from both universities.
